UNU-GCM is pleased to announce that Doctor Pietro Bartolo will give our 2017 Annual Guest Lecture entitled, ‘Let’s not think of them as clandestine migrants.’
Registration to attend the event has now closed but we welcome you to watch our live stream here, in English, on Saturday, November 18th, 18:30 CET. Here, Dr. Bartolo will share with us his own experience and the realities of the work he has been undertaking for these last two decades.
Let’s not think of them as clandestine migrants
Doctor Bartolo has overseen the medical care of over 250,000 migrants who have arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa since the 1990s. As well as saving many lives, he has also learned of the stories behind those lives. In this year’s Guest Lecture he will share with us these experiences.
During the event there will be a poetry reading by Dominic Hand, winner of the prestigious 2017 Newdigate Prize in the UK, of specially commissioned work. Additionally, guests will be able to explore ‘Hopeful Journeys’, a photography exhibition by the visual anthropologist and photographer, Tatiana Diniz, based on life stories collected as part of a UNU-GCM project about migration around the Mediterranean.

El Dr. Bartolo ha supervisado la atención médica prestada a más de 250.000 migrantes que han llegado a la isla italiana de Lampedusa desde los años noventa. Además de salvar numerosas vidas, también ha aprendido muchas cosas de las historias que esconden esas vidas. En la Conferencia Anual de 2017, el Dr. Bartolo compartirá estas experiencias con todos nosotros.
Durante el acto se celebrará un recital poético a cargo de Dominic Hand, ganador del prestigioso Premio Newdigate 2017 en el Reino Unido, que leerá poemas especialmente creados para la ocasión. Por otro lado, los asistentes podrán visitar la exposición fotográfica Hopeful Journeys, en la que se exhibe material de la fotógrafa y antropóloga visual Tatiana Diniz. La muestra recoge una serie de historias reunidas en el marco del proyecto de UNU-GCM sobre migración en el Mediterráneo.

El Dr. Bartolo ha supervisat l’atenció mèdica prestada a més de 250.000 migrants arribats a l’illa italiana de Lampedusa des dels anys noranta. A més de salvar un gran nombre de vides, també ha après moltes coses de les històries que hi ha darrere d’aquestes vides. En la Conferència Anual de 2017, el Dr. Bartolo compartirà aquestes experiències amb nosaltres.
L’acte inclourà un recital poètic a càrrec de Dominic Hand, guanyador del prestigiós Premi Newdigate 2017 al Regne Unit, qui llegirà poemes especialment creats per a l’ocasió. D’altra banda, els assistents podran visitar l’exposició fotogràfica Hopeful Journeys, on s’exhibeix material de la fotògrafa i antropòloga visual Tatiana Diniz.
